Male Facial Anatomy: Why Your Dose Should Be Different

Why male facial muscles are different
Male facial muscles are generally larger, stronger, and more deeply positioned than their female counterparts. The masseter, temporalis, frontalis, corrugator, and procerus muscles all tend to be more developed in men – the result of greater overall muscle mass, hormonal differences, and often decades of concentrated tension patterns that have strengthened specific muscle groups over time.
The practical consequence: a dose that produces full, balanced relaxation in a female patient will frequently under-treat a male patient in the same area. This is not a minor calibration issue. Under-dosing in a male patient produces either no visible result or a patchy result where some muscle fibers relax and others continue contracting, creating an uneven, asymmetric appearance.
The corrugator and procerus muscles – the primary drivers of the glabellar furrow, the vertical line between the brows – are a frequent example. In men who hold significant tension in this area, these muscles are often significantly stronger than standard dosing tables account for. Getting full, smooth relaxation of the glabellar region in a man typically requires a meaningfully higher dose than the standard female treatment protocol, placed with precise awareness of where the muscle sits at depth.
Treatment area considerations specific to men
Men's brow position is generally lower and flatter than women's, and the aesthetic goal for brow position in male treatment is also different. Women's treatments often include a slight brow lift as an intended aesthetic outcome. In men, lifting the brow too high creates an unnatural, feminine appearance. Preserving the natural flat brow position requires deliberate placement choices and dose calibration that accounts for the balance between brow elevators and depressors in male anatomy.
Men are also more likely to present with significant forehead bulk and deeper baseline lines from years of concentrated expression. Treating the frontalis – the muscle responsible for forehead movement – requires a careful approach in men to avoid heaviness or the drooping brow that can result from over-treatment of an already low-positioned brow.
