Secretomes + Microneedling: Why the Combination Matters

At Boundless, the most advanced hair restoration protocol pairs secretomes with microneedling. Understanding why takes the combination from "sounds logical" to "mechanistically justified."
What microneedling contributes
Medical-grade microneedling creates thousands of controlled micro-channels across the scalp. This does two things simultaneously.
First, it dramatically increases the scalp's permeability. A biologic applied to an intact scalp surface largely stays near the surface. Once micro-channels are open, penetration depth increases significantly, bringing the secretome into contact with the follicular tissue it needs to influence.
Second, the controlled micro-injury activates the body's own repair response: increased local blood flow, collagen synthesis, growth factor release from surrounding tissue, and stem cell activation in the follicle. This creates a biological environment that is actively in repair mode precisely when the secretome arrives.

What secretomes contribute
Secretomes are the full-spectrum communication system produced by hair follicle stem cells, containing growth factors, natively produced exosomes, PDRN, cytokines, and hundreds of additional bioactive signaling molecules at concentrations significantly higher than PRP or standalone exosome preparations (Altendorf et al., Physiological Reviews, 2025). What the combined protocol looks like
Sessions run 45 to 60 minutes. Topical numbing is applied before microneedling. Recovery is minimal – mild redness and scalp sensitivity for 24 to 48 hours are normal. Most men notice reduced shedding in the first four to six weeks. Visible improvements typically emerge between weeks eight and twelve, continuing to mature through months six to twelve.
